Steemit Lotteries, Spam Disguised as a Game

Recently I have stumbled on the #freesteem tag. Under this tag there are many daily "lotteries". These "lotteries" are posts that one user will write and then distribute the rewards to all the upvoters. The promise of free Steem may sound tempting at first, but it is important to realize what these posts are doing to the Steemit reward pool.

Ideally, the reward pool is spread over everyone being productive on the Steem blockchain. Unfortunately, these users are not being productive at all. Instead they are upvoting each other for reposting and spamming. This unproductive activity cuts into the reward pool that everyone shares. A post about underwater habitats or password recovery receives less from the reward pool due to this activity.

Fortunately, every Steemit user has the power to stop this abuse. Using your Steem Power you can flag this content to take away their rewards and return it to the people posting good content on Steem. If you don't have much Steem Power you can report posts like this to @steemcleaners using this online form.

These "lotteries" undermine the unique power that Steemit has to help all users become content creators. Both the value of Steem and the financial incentive to create high quality posts and comments is negatively affected if rewards are going to spammers. To maintain our community, we must remain vigilant against these problems.
