What is the "Local Fluff"?

in #space3 years ago

"As our Sun and planets travel through interstellar space in our part of the Milky Way Galaxy, we exist in a region called the Orion Arm. Within the arm are clouds of gas and dust, and regions that have less than average amounts of interstellar gases. Today, astronomers know that our planet and Sun is moving through a mixture of hydrogen and helium atoms called the "Local Interstellar Cloud" or, more colloquially, the "Local Fluff"."

"Local fluff is an interstellar cloud that is part of a much bigger cavity in space called the Local Bubble. We, the residents of Earth, exist in a region called Orion’s arm. The Orion’s arm consists of various clouds that are made up of gas and dust emanating from other galaxies. The astronomers and experts have discovered that our planet is moving through a mixture of hydrogen and helium atoms called the ‘Local Interstellar Cloud’ or the ‘Local Fluff’."

"Our solar system is passing through a cloud of interstellar material that shouldn't be there, astronomers say. And now the decades-old Voyager spacecraft have helped solved the mystery."

"The cloud is called the "Local Fluff." It's about 30 light-years wide and holds a wispy mix of hydrogen and helium atoms, according to a NASA statement released today. Stars that exploded nearby, about 10 million years ago, should have crushed the Fluff or blown it away."

"The “Local Fluff,” as the NASA scientists termed it, is about 30 light-years across and contains a mix of “wispy” hydrogen and helium atoms at a temperature of 6000º C. The gas is unusually warm, which the researchers attributed to an explosion that took place some 10 million years ago. They did not expect the warm gas bubble to be there, as it should have collapsed due to surrounding pressure long ago."

"The Fluff is held at bay just beyond the edge of the solar system by the sun's magnetic field, which is inflated by solar wind into a magnetic bubble more than 10 billion km wide. Called the "heliosphere," this bubble acts as a shield that helps protect the inner solar system from galactic cosmic rays and interstellar clouds."

"The immediate galactic neighborhood of the Solar System is known as the Local Interstellar Cloud or Local Fluff, an area of denser cloud in an otherwise sparse region known as the Local Bubble, an hourglass-shaped cavity in the interstellar medium roughly 300 light years across. The bubble is suffused with high-temperature plasma that suggests it is the product of several recent supernovae."
