New NASA Study Finds That Solar Storms Trigger Sparks, And Melt Soil On The Moon's Poles

great post. thank you.

i'd be surprised if no one predicted this. if the Earth didn't have an atmosphere, the same would happen here. if you've seen the auroras, you've seen the incredible amounts of energy that comes into our system from solar storms. it is weird to me that this was only discovered at the moon's poles, because the moon doesn't much spin, and can't have much of a magnetic field. when the solar storm energy comes to Earth, it is channeled mostly to the magnetic poles.

About time people knew the protection our atmosphere provides! The amount of energy out there is immense and if we could only tap a small percentage, then our power needs would be fulfilled with just that.
And a good point about the poles, but I guess the pulverizing is heavier at those extremes, but it still is an interesting study which makes us realize the destruction we would have without our "shield"!

Thanks.

I just finished watching Doomsday End of the World series which are about 10 different theoretical ways the world cold end. It was chilling how helpless we are on this planet.

Solar Flares was an episode.

What I find interesting about it having such an effect on the moon was I read in another article ling ago about how the moon is pretty much made out of the best possible combination of materials to block or absorb different types of radiation.

Hope it a big one doesn't hit us.

good post

Even with the protection afforded by our atmosphere, we shall still be affected by a large solar flare as our electronics would be decimated with an EMP. That is, in today's world, a calamity which would take civilization back and could be considered a doomsday scenario!

oh yea. we are doomed. the entire world would be in trouble if it happened today. The last time it happened the only electronics humans were using were telegraph and it melted all the wires right off the pole. Bu tthen the world didn't rely on electricity so it really didn't effect anything but quick long distance communications which was still new and other options were still very common.

If all of earths electrical wires were fried right off the poles today we would all be screwed in countless ways which would require and entire article to explain. and im not that guy. lol

Great post as always. gets me thinking.

I think the last one was in 1861, when telegraphs worked at very low voltages and were powered by "earth batteries". Yet it took years to get it up and running again. The scene today would be chaotic, the likes of which can only be imagined!

Very interesting @norbu, I never really thought about the effect that solar emissions may have on atmospheric less bodies like the moon.

With modern electronics taking over our lives, these revelations might makes us more aware of the impact of deep space radiation and prepare us.
Thanks!

Indeed, very true!

Well, as soon as our atmosphere is there to protect us, I guess we are safe ^^

However a interesting post @norbu.thank you.good work.Greets

Glad you liked it, thanks!
