2016 Mercury Transit in 4K

in #space6 years ago

Hey guys, I picked up an interesting video from NASA’s official website: https://www.nasa.gov/ which recorded mercury transit happened on 9th May, 2016 between Earth and the Sun. The video is made from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory or SDO.

NASA Goddard

This rare astronomical event happened around 13 times in a century. This is called a planetary transit. To see the mercury in this video, you will have to watch it very carefully because the size of mercury is shown smaller than that of the Sun. Due to small size, you can miss the view of mercury transit between Earth and the Sun.

This astronomical event can help NASA scientists understand how planets and stars transit in space. I have read in school books that all planets including Earth move around the Sun which is a star of our solar system. However we never feel that Earth is rotating on its axis or revolving the Sun. There are a lot of reasons behind it. But this video can make you understand how planets move around the Sun.

This video is very interesting but you need to watch it very carefully to detect the mercury transit around the Sun.
