R.I.P. astronaut Eugene Cernan, last human on the Moon
Astronaut Eugene Cernan died on January 16, at 83. In December 1972 he commanded Apollo-17, the last lunar mission, and was the last human to leave Moon. Photo made in the Challenger lander, on the Moon surface, after walk, there are regolith stains on his spacesuit.
Before returning for Earth he'd left his Hasselblad 500 camera on the Moon with lens up for next people could pick it and check after being exposed to space radiation. Of course he could not imagine that after 45 years no human will step on the Moon again.
He wrote excellent memoirs - The Last Man on the Moon.
Time is leaking as sand between fingers - of dozen astronauts walking on the Moon only six are alive now and the youngest of them is 81.
He wrote (quoting by memory, as cannot find the book - gave it to somebody):
When you see what i've seen, you understand that God does exist. Religions, names are not important - He does exist independently of how humans imagine Him. I witnessed all beauty of His creation and I believe in Him.
Farewell Eugene Cernan... The end is the beginning.
I hope that in one (close) day, we will restart going there :)
No doubt. My guess is 10 years (too long though). Chinese seem to be most determined to do this
