more on the challenges of resurrecting Mars' atmosphere

in #space6 years ago

I did a short post on a paper that showed Mars lacks the gases to make a thick atmosphere. The paper by the team working with NASA's Maven space probe orbiting Mars now. The whole point of Maven's mission was and is to find out where the once thicker atmosphere of Mars went. The hope had been that it was sequestered in rocks on the planet. We now know that is not the case. Mars is losing about 2 kg of atmosphere per second at current rates. That means the atmosphere was lost to space...and we'd have to import more gases, roughly the amount of a Kuiper Belt Object, something the size of the dwarf planet Pluto, to make Mars have an atmosphere with sea level pressure.

The above webinar was done to explain the challenges of terraforming Mars, or at least getting it to have a thick atmosphere again. Enjoy.
