South Korea
The Olympics are drawing to a close, but have given wonderful insights into the lives and traditions of the people of South Korea. A few years ago, I was commissioned to photograph impressions of the capital, Seoul, through all four seasons. I found a fascinating mix of enduring traditions, futuristic vision and a delightful eccentricity.
- A model twirling in "hanbok", the traditional, distinctive and gorgeous attire of the Korean people. Worn daily until a century ago, it's now saved for ceremonies and celebrations.
- Looking inside the Jogyesa Temple at a golden Buddha statue, with winter trees reflected in the glass window
- A businessman leaving the Gangnam subway station during morning rush hour.
- A groundskeeper sweeping the steps of the National Museum. Decorated with images of the pyramids, the steps are a surreal trompe l'oeil [trick of the eye] and create a confusing and strange visual illusion.
- Cars parked under holiday lights.
- Looking through plastic windows at an ice skating rink
