In this episode presented by Aloft Hotels, we spoke to Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, who is a musician/producer turned film composer changing the way films are scored. He’s part of a new class of commercial or popular producers getting into the composing scene, and instead of using a traditional full orchestra, he often records an entire soundtrack in his studio using synths and instruments he’s created. He composed the scores for Deadpool, Mad Max: Fury Road and Batman vs Superman. He is currently working on the new Terminator and Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks.

His theory is interesting, and it would be a lot of fun to make scores for movies and TV. I say that to myself almost every day. However, there is something to be said for when the director just combs through all of their favorite music in their library and they cherry pick certain elements of certain tracks for certain scenes.
The score for Mad Max was really great, but on the flip side, compare that to the score of some older movies like Natural Born Killers, or The Crow. Both of those movies had incredible soundtracks and someone in the production crew doing music really knew their shit too!
It is a different approach, neither is necessarily better than the other... Just different.

It is the greatest show I never have time for. I know of the special episode where Blade and other cameos happen, I will binge the show one day.
On the topic of good soundtracks, in recent times from the hipping hop world, Black Panther and Creed 2 soundtracks are so well put together, having that one producer mentality kind of orchestrating the whole thing helped make these two what they are imo. I have played these two soundtracks out specifically as much as I had the original Crow or even like the Singles soundtrack when they were released.
