Audio filters.......... types and common function
Hello everyone its @phatstudio again, today on "Spectral Processors" we are going to take a look at FILTERS.
Filters has been used by musicians for hunderes of years to shape the sound of their art in various ways. The evolution of these filters came as a result of the evolution of the physical dimensions of the violin. And Once a sound is aerial there is yet more filtering performed by the listening environment.
Be for we go further, lets understand what these filters our.
Filters:
This is mediums that can modify a music signal that passes through it.They are used to remove groups of frequencies from an audio signal.
When looking at this filters they are different types of filters that we can run into
Types of filters include:
Band-cut filter
High-pass filter (HPF)
Band-pass filter
Low-pass filter (LPF)
Notch filter
Comb filter
In this article, I will be explaining this filters and how they work. The first filter that we will be looking at is the
High-pass filter (HPF)
This filter let through the high frequency by cutting all the low frequencies. This filter can be really helpful when you need to remove a whole bunch of low frequency from a signal and can also be really cool as an effect. This filter is also known as the low-cut filter.
Low-pass filter (LPF)
This filter is the direct opposite of the high-pass filter. This filter let through the low frequency by cutting all the high frequencies. This filter can also be used as an effect.
Band-cut filter (BCF)
This filter helps in removing a region or a band of frequencies for the mix. Let's say we have these really annoying frequencies around 400Hz or 500Hz. With a band-cut filter we can actually just remove that small portion of frequencies in that area.
Band-pass filters (BPF)
This filter basically removes all the low frequencies and the high frequencies from a point and keeps a band of frequencies in the middle.
Notch filters
This filter also works like the band-cut filter. But in this case it works with a really narrow band. So it will only affects a small group of frequencies.
Comb filter
This filter is a series of the notch filter in a roll. So it basically looks like a comb
So what are the functions that we can find on this filters?
Common Functions
Frequency parameter:
Probably the most important function is the frequency parameter.
This allows us to set from where the filter should work. When we are working with a low-cut filter, the frequency parameter defines from were below the frequencies will be cut. So the frequency is probably the first setting we apply when we insert a filter.
Slope:
This describes the attenuate of frequencies per octave. Slopes normally go in steps of 6db, so we can have a slope of 6db which means for every octave the attenuation will be 6db more. if we use a slope of 24, that means for every octave we will an attenuation of 24, so that is basically a much steeper slope. meaning it filters more and we will have more effect.
> N/B: Most filters allows you set the amount of attenuation per octave but normally this is fixed in groups of six so that we can choose from, 6,12,18,24 etc.
Resonance:
This function is actually a small bust at the ages of our frequencies selection. This enhances the sound of a sweep mover while making a filter weep through the spectrum.
CONCLUSION
Filters are very important in music production, we make use of this filters in every piece of music we create. Without this filters it would be difficult to get full-bodied sound during production. Also this filters can arbitrarily shape the spectrum.
Thanks for reading!
Until next time!
nice one there
