📀 Your Cover's Blown: Hi-Fi Mixtape & contest - 🤘🏽No Resteem, No Follow, No Upvote🤘🏽

...For those who came in late...

Last week I posted a contest based on the original 30-day #song-challenge.

But then, HF20 happened, and this probably got lost in the rubble... so there were no entries, understandably, as folk either didn't have the mana or were afraid to spend any to post. So, I'm keeping it going this week...

🤘🏽No Resteem/Follow/Upvote required🤘🏽

Track 15: A song you like that's a cover by another artist

I'm resuming the creation of my own #hifimixtape, and today I'm considering cover songs.

This is a tricky one. Covers can either be brilliant re-imaginings, or appalling atrocities.

When you think about it, playing 'covers' has always been a staple of the modern rock band. The Blues singers and Jazz artists of early days would always 'cover' others' work. In the 60's, acts such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had covers in their repertoire. Playing the work of artists that inspired us to pick up an instrument in the first place is how we learn to play music - this is true of classical music too!

In the past 30 years the 'tribute album' has become a thing, where various artists record their favourite tunes from the artist/band being honoured. Even in Jazz, stalwarts like Herbie Hancock collaborate with other artists to produce 'the new standard'.

So which 'cover' do I choose for my ultimate #hifimixtape?

Thank U by Steven Wilson

I'm not entirely certain why I picked this song. Part of it was a resistance to choosing something that was a cover of the 'old new standard' of Beatles/Rolling Stones/Bob Dylan. But I am huge fan of Wilson, I love the sombre tone in his music. I was kind of into Alanis Morrissette when her first album came out - she was edgy and totally exemplified the grunge-aesthetic of the 90's.

I don't remember this song of hers, and to be honest I haven't bothered to look it up (a glaring omission in my collection, I know).

Perhaps it's the mention of India. It's not quite the same, but the sentiment in the lyrics triggers my memories of my time in Nepal. I was 22, and it was my first time overseas. I went for 4 weeks on a reforestation project in Pokhara, in the western Himalaya. My time there changed me, I was exposed to real poverty and real happiness in the same place, discovered Buddhism, and a sense of wonder at the natural world that I did not have growing up in the middle-class suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.

All I can say of that time, and that place, and those people is... "thank u". ❤️🙏🏽❤️

Thank you India
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you thank you silence

And now for the contest details.....

Another 6 SBI up for grabs!!

And the contest continues this week, with a total of 6 SBI to be awarded to entries which follow these guidelines:

  1. Create a post about a track (see table above). Include either an audio or video link (or both) to the song. More importantly - tell us a story! What is it about this song? Why have you chosen it? What's the story or memory anchored to it? Feel free to use pictures (appropriately referenced) as well as words. Basically - make this a quality post!!
You can choose any track to enter the contest.
And you can enter as many times as you like, as many tracks as you like.

  2. Use the tags #song-challenge and #hifimixtape for each post.

  3. Include a link back to this specific post in your entry, so others can find it easily.

  4. To be eligible for the SBI vote, put link to your entry in the COMMENTS for this post. That way I'll be able to check it out.

As I have discovered over the week, it's considered bad form to have upvoting/resteeming as part of the contest rules.

So, you do not have to upvote or resteem this post, or follow me!!

Just enter your post as laid out in the guidelines above.

I would invite you to check out other peoples entries when they're posted, and let them know what you think of it, but this is not a requirement for entry.

You have 7 days to enter, with the winners being announced after this time.

Have fun, and turn it up to 11!

Enjoy!
😊🤘🏽🎸
