How to Make a Solar Eclipse Viewer at Home With a Cereal Box

Good evening, Steemians!

Well, if you're like me, you've been looking around the past couple days for some of those solar eclipse glasses so that you can look at the solar eclipse this Monday, August 21st, between 1:00 and 4:00 PM.

I've been to Walmart, Walgreen's, 7-11, Circle K, etc., all of the places they say you can go for last minute solar eclipse glasses. Nobody has them anymore. All sold out. A dude on Craigslist is literally price gouging $20 a pair for $1-2 pair of glasses. Big douchey move. There's also the very real fact that many of these glasses sold were "fakes" and can cause your retina damage if worn during the eclipse to view it directly.

Enter the DIY Cereal Box Solar Eclipse viewer. It's not as cool, because you stand with your back facing the sun and view the sun's reflection through the viewer, but it will ensure you don't have messed up vision for years (there are going to be many people who foolishly look at the Eclipse with their naked eye and will likely be visiting doctors - no joke.

Step 1: Get a cereal box or shoe box.

Step 2: Get a white piece of paper and trace the bottom of the box with a pen or pencil

Step 3: Cut out the rectangular piece of paper and stick it in the bottom of the empty cereal box (won't even need tape for this step if done correctly) and cut off the smaller side tabs of the box

Step 4: Cut out part of each large tab of the cereal box so that you have two equal sized pieces missing like shown below. Tape tabs together like so.

Step 5: Get a piece of aluminum foil and cover one of the holes completely. Tape sides so it won't fall off and so that the foil sits there tight.

Step 6: Get a thumbtack and make a small hole (size of thumbtack) in the center of the aluminum foil. This is going to be where the sun goes in.

Now, when the Eclipse happens, turn your back to the sun, align the box so that the foil part is on top and you can look into the open hole. Align so that the sun shines through the tiny hole in the aluminum foil onto the center of the white paper at the bottom of the box. You will see the reflection of the partially covered sun by the moon.

Here is a video of a man explaining the whole thing in case you need extra help:

Thanks for stopping by, view the eclipse safely please!

Very cool. I wish I were back in my home town of Boise, Id. I think they are right in the path of the full eclipse. Enjoy!
