The Homa Bay project :

  • 6,750 people provided with electricity
  • 1,263 tons CO2 reduced
  • 5.1 % expected annual return
  • 30 months payback period

Our eighth loan to Raj Ushanga House (RUH) will bring 1,300 solar home systems to rural households in Kenya. More than 6,000 people will gain access to clean electricity and over 1,200 tons of CO2 emissions will be avoided.

Elisha Odenyo lives in Homa Bay in Western Kenya with his mother and four siblings. He studies Civil Engineering and supports his family through farming maize, beans and peanuts. The family used to have a solar home system before becoming customers of Raj Ushanga House but it stopped working which forced them to go back to kerosene. The fumes from the kerosene caused chest problems and coughing for Elisha, which resulted in medical cost between 5,000-10,000 KES per week.
Elisha now saves 1,790 KES (around €17,90) each month from having the solar home system. This money was previously spent on kerosene (3000 KES/month) and phone charging (150 KES/month) but can now be invested in improving their living standards and building a brighter future for the family.

Our solar partner

Raj Ushanga House (RUH) was founded in 1980 and started distributing solar products in 2013. They formed a partnership with Azuri Technologies in 2014 to begin importing, distributing and financing solar home systems in Kenya. RUH has over 18,000 customers in Kenya and are currently installing more than 2,000 solar home systems each month.

What’s in a solar home system?

  • 4 Lamps
  • Phone charger
  • Battery
  • Control system - to optimise energy usage
  • Solar panel

People are able to Pay-As-You-Go. This payment method means there are no big, upfront costs and more people are able to switch from fossil fuels to solar energy.

Expected return

The expected 5,1 % annual return is calculated on the declining balance, which means that the borrower (solar partner) only pays interest on outstanding borrowed capital.
