The OneDrive is now only willing to work with the NTFS filesystem

Microsoft unexpectedly stopped supporting non-NTFS filesystems in the updated version of OneDrive which reached a lot of users as a cold stream. In addition to that not just the exFAT and the FAT32 become non-supported but the next generation ReFS too.

Some OneDrive users woke up to an unpleasant present because the support for non-NTFS filesystems is unexpectedly disappeared from Microsoft's OneDrive desktop client. If someone tries to create the OneDrive folder with a different filesystem, the software display an announcement in a poput that "the filesystem is unsupported" and displaying a request to the user to choose a supported (NTFS) drive or convert the drive to NTFS. People who previously installed the OneDrive to a non-NTFS filesystem are also receiving the same message.

The user receptions for this restriction which is applied without any warning or notification is not so positive. Especially the fact that this is not just applied for the free users but also for the users who are paying for the service. Not big surprise that the Reddit and the Microsoft's forum is full of complaining users about this move.

The fact that Microsoft wants to leave the outdated filesystems is comletely understandable however Microsoft should have warned it's users before they stopped supporting the FAT32 which is used for decades to give them at least 1-2 weeks to get ready for the exclusive NTFS support. The word exclusive worth to take literally because the OneDrive is giving farewell not just for the outdated filesystems but a lot of users saying that OneDrive is not working with the next generation fated ReFS and the software also gave farewell to the relatively modern (created mainly for flash drives) exFAT.

The ReFS is created by the company (Microsoft) (for the first time approximately 5 years ago) introduced with Windows Server 2012 is practically predestinated for the successor of NTFS by Microsoft. According to Microsoft this will solve a lot of problems in the currently used system. Introducing updates such as automated integrity checking, integrated RAID functions, managing very long file names and destinations, storage virtualization. According to the plans the ReFS will arrive soon in the main Windows 10 versions but for now it' seems like Microsoft didn't take the trouble so far to make OneDrive compatible with the next generation systems.

Last time when the OneDrive service generated a very loud dislike from the users was in 2015 when Microsoft dropped the unlimited OneDrive storage after people use it for unlimited storage said some people abused the service by storing more than 75TB of movies and TV shows.

Despite the actual negative feedback from the users it's unlikely for Microsoft to revert from stopping supporting of the outdated filesystems but they probably will solve the ReFS's fiasco.
