Background Information

I am looking for a spreadsheet app that goes beyond what Excel does or something that evolved differently. So, in doing so I went to the Play Store to see what I could find.

Chrome Book applications are mostly apps that were designed for phones and tablets. This makes a lot of software in general poorly adapted for Chrome Book. However, there are times when a user doesn't have access to a Linux or Windows based computer and may have a Chrome Book for economic disparity.

Total Spreadsheet

It looks like the author is heading to an interesting direction with this. Unlike simply being a copy of the original spreadsheet software. This one does away with the A, B, C column names. Unfortunately..., it is crippled in that it only has two fixed columns, and there is no way to change the title from what they are to some other value. Perhaps it might evolve into something interesting and it looks like it is going to.

Simple Spreadsheet (free)

It accepts the carrot operator as an exponent op. But it doesn't apply exponentiation before multiplication. Not cool.

What I liked about this app however, is it supports scanning stuff in. So you could populate a CSV column or row where you wish to have barcode or some other data that you need to load in. You could do this with some other android device that is easier to carry. It does have a utility.

Google Sheets

Google Sheets seems to be as functional as Excel except that it is a real challenge to save to the local drive. You end up having to save your spreadsheet to their cloud. Surprised? It really is what you have come to expect from Excel except for not being able to save on the computer you are using. That might be okay for some people, however.

Andr Open

The application lets you open Open Office files. You can modify spreadsheets from these apps. It is not that different from Excel. It even lets you save to the local-drive. In order to save to a local-sd card you must select "cloud storage". That's kind of funny.

Polaris Office

Looking very much like Microsoft Office, it demands you sign up for something in order to use it. I never got to look at this because of that. It is a bit of a pain that they require that kind of thing.

Excel (Microsoft Office)

You can use the Excel documents and edit them. It is what we are used to if you come from a Windows background. I was disappointed to see there was an opportunity to sign in but no opportunity to skip that step.

Spreadsheet Calculator

This app is not a spread sheet app in the usual sense. Each row has only room for a value, an operator, another value, and the answer. I was surprised how it used the square root symbol. If I put five, square root symbol, and then two. I expect that to mean five roots of two but instead it is interpreted as the fifth root of two. Note the five doesn't get written as smaller and is not positioned over the square-root symbol to indicate this.

Conclusion

In short the best of all of the Apps is by far Andr Office. It gives you the power of Excel but without the requirement of logging in to some other server.
