God against Sodom and Gomorrah: He did not spare the neighbors of Lot, abominable in their pride. Ben Sira 16:8

The Bible constantly teaches us that God condemns sin, but protects those who live righteously. The story in the book of Genesis about the salvation of Lot and his family and the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah for the sins of its inhabitants is the verification of a fundamental spiritual teaching of the sapiential books: "For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction" Psalm 1:6.
For this reason, the master of wisdom Ben Sira, taught in his book about the punishment reserved for sinners, when he mentioned the legendary cities of Sodom and Gomorrah: "He did not spare the neighbors of Lot, abominable in their pride" Ben Sira 16:8.
But the story of Lot in Sodom and how Lot escaped from the city has an important detail, Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt. The angels sent by the Lord had warned Lot: "The outcry of the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it" Genesis 19:13. And then the angels said to Lot: "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain!" Genesis 19:17.
But it happened that while fleeing, Lot's wife made the mistake of ignoring the warning that was given to his family:
"Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt" Genesis 19:24-26.
Those who look back do so because they long for what they abandon, if we leave sin in the past it is a contradiction to look back. God punished Lot's wife for longing for the city where she lived.
The inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah reaped what they sowed. God wants life for man, but men must not forget a wise teaching: "Great as his mercy is his punishment; he judges people, each according to their deeds" Ben Sira 16:12.
