the society as it is if we all agree or not need pillars on which it should in order to maintain a functional society with constant peace and stability in other words, they are the backbone of the society. Many societies have experienced or are experiencing social upheavals due to failures in its major institutions which are supposed to not only exist but carry out effectively its unique roles.
The society revolves around 5 major institutions and not one of them can afford to be weak which would result in unrest and series of problems which i believe that if you take a quick look at your society today, you can tell that a problem is somewhere, most especially in societies that the social problems are very evident.

The five major institutions

• Family: this is the institution responsible for
  the bringing of new members to the society
  the primary socialization of new children
  providing immediate economic and emotional needs of their members
  the regulation or control of sexual behaviour

• Economy: Responsible for
  the provision of goods and services and distribution
  the provision of employment
  seeing to coordinated and sustainable development of the economy

• Government: responsible for
  the implementation, interpretation and enforcement of law
  protecting its citizens from any external threats
  the settling of conflicts among citizens
  provision for the welfare of the citizens of the society

• Education: responsible for
  socialization of individuals to become good citizens of their society
  evaluating,selecting and developing member's unique skills for competent function-ability in the society
  preparation of members for occupational roles in the society

• Religion: responsible for
  upholding morality in its members
  supporting the normative structure of the society
  providing answers that naturally, cant be explained.

We cannot agree less that failures in these functions as listed above are evident.
the society and its institutions are definitely as old as the beginning of life itself, and in life change is the only thing that is constant. As we all know that societies also move from stages to stages, and in the general term, from the rural to the urbanization (it has much more classifications, but i don't want delve into that now). Societies experience change or react to change differently and some change rapidly that the other and in one way or another societies are influenced by one another. There has been argument that it is the advent of urbanization that brought a lot of social problems. I won't agree more or agree less but what i want to point out is that society is bound to exist with its problems even from times before urbanization.
Yes the advent of urbanization left social problems in its wake, but i just want to argue that it was due to ta failure in one of the social institutions that led to the problem they are all facing right now. Every problem has a root and in the society, the failure of one leads to the failure of all which can almost not be curbed.
List of few social problems that are evident at least in my own locality (Nigeria)
Illiteracy
Lack of good leadership
Corruption
Terrorism
inter-tribal disharmony
population explosion
poverty
immorality
unemployment and many others.

With all these existing problems such society cannot experience peace and stability. it shows that the institutions have failed to carry out their functions and only continue to fail. This will continue to affect the general population because it can result in a shift in the mindset of the people and affect more people with the spread continuing. The first instinct of every human is survival and you'd be surprised what people can do to survive.

The educational institution is failing, not producing quality individuals who have not been well equipped within the four walls of the educational centre in preparation for the outside world. The family no longer has time for its younger ones sometimes due to their work, some may provide economical support but not the emotional support thereby unleashing a new psychopath into the society, and some families don't even provide economical and emotional support all together, some maybe not because they have and don't want to provide but because the economy has failed them and left them stranded in their own society with no hope from the failing government who are supposed to take care of welfare of its members and protect them. this same government that the people look up to for security are also the one exterminating her own members, using her own members against themselves instead of providing peace. The religion that the people are supposed to run to for sanctuary also rip its people off and use them, feeding them lies because of the people's faith. Its just a continuous circle of hopelessness. The institutions that are supposed to work together to help the people are now working together against their own people.

In conclusion, with every change in the society, a problem is imminent but the instituions should all be functional enough to adapt and move with it. Urbanization is good, what state would the society be if it doesn't grow, but this decline if left unchecked then the society is doomed.
but then, the question on my mind, is capitalism the doom of the society?
