Actually if managed correctly immigration is great. Raising children, maternity leave, education, etc. are all major drains on the economy (or investments for the future) attracting immigrants to fill holes in a countries economic system is very good for the country receiving the immigrants but can be disastrous for the country they leave. A lot of the newly developed countries or eastern block like Poland and Ukraine are facing massive brain drain and skilled labor shortages. On the other hand the immigrants could move back home and uses their modest western european salaries to live like the upper middle class in some of these countries.
