China's new social media craze - does Steem have the solution?

in #social5 years ago

I stumbled upon an article today saying there's a new social media craze going on in China, users are using Tencent's WeChat to pay people to praise them on the internet. Apparently users are getting sick of all the hatred and trolling going on online so they are residing to buying praise to make up for the lack of it. Some people are getting paid $2-3 for 3-5 minutes of praising a person that is paying for it.

As we've come to learn by now, a lot of trolling/bullying and hate is going on online and it is near impossible to stop it. Content creators and streamers are usually the ones on the receiving end and even though they can mute and ban users but that only seems to fuel them more and creating new accounts is not of difficulty meaning these streamers have to constantly face the same situation daily and for hours. This naturally takes a toll on the users mental health no matter the level of harassment when it occurs on a frequent basis.

These "praising groups" may have started out because of the opposite "curse groups"' existence.

Now here on Steem you may have noticed that depending on the size of users accounts or the votes they can provide to commenters there can be a lot of fake praising and attention. Isn't it better to wade through fakeness than having to constantly read negative comments, though? Considering how accounts are created here and the cost of RC or Steem making it harder to just start fresh whenever you like it becomes harder and harder to become a troll and lash out to random users because of your own issues. This leads to accounts not wanting to risk their reputation and what they have achieved with their online persona so trolling and hate doesn't occur here as often. Not to mention everything stays forever on our blockchain, even edits.

I mean, the mindset is much different over in China as tho. So trolling may be a bigger issue there.

You are totally correct @acidyo. Fake praises or not, it is better than hate and steemit give you that. But I can say for myself, my praises are genuine because am an opinionated person. 😁, so if a disagree with you on something, I will say also.

Just be ourselves :) that’s what I’m saying too! Hi5

Lol, praise group. That’s new to me. Well, most of us here are positive folks that spread the good vibe around rather than hatred. Looking at such trend, I think I could recruit myself into this praising group 😂😂 even though it may sounds fake, but from the bottom of my heart, I still prefer spreading love rather than hatred.

Paid praise is certainly something new we've heard.

Didn't someone post a while back that steemit was banned in China? (I could be wrong.)

Could be, good luck banning the blockchain, though.

@wherein is the app for the Chinese market. Steemit was banned and it affected steemconnect of all things. @wherein are busy with whereinconnect now. They have a big team and look as though they will get it right.

😎 BlockChain 4EVER

They can block all the Steem RPC nodes of which there are not many. Maybe about ten put together. Without access to a Steem full node (witness+RPC), no app can interact with the blockchain.

That's true, thank god for VPN's though. I heard Opera is offering free VPN on their new browser.

VPN's can help but how many VPN servers do they have access to in China? None of this may matter from our POV if Wherein plays ball with the Chinese government and blocks whatever content the gov requires. It would still be great news for Steem.

Jep I was read same post some long time go back gere on steemit @johnhtims

I think the hatred and trolling stuff happens more often in centralized social media platforms because it is very easy to create an accounts and just troll people for personal reasons and because there is nothing at stake for theses trollers to lose rather than a ban on their account . But with decentralize social platform where you it takes alot to build a reputation for yourself , you will find it hard for trolling to strive

This are some serious problems and honestly spoken I would love to see more and more people from China to join Steemit. Also in terms of censorship... but this is really another topic, because there are too many questions about it.

Of course Steemit also could need some improvements. I am still not very happy with the fact, that we can "buy" votes to get more attention...

Money can buy a lot of things, unfortunately.

Unfortunately... Our world maybe would be better, if this wouldn't be the case. But unfortunately we can buy weapons, integrity and even people (as whole or just bodyparts...) for example. Sick shit.

Isn't it better to wade through fakeness than having to constantly read negative comments, though?

Yes, it is.

Encouraging each other and lifting each other up to keep going is a good idea fake or not. There is enough negativity in the world. This is a good post to read first thing in the morning.

These praise groups are a new thing hahahaha.
Btw I read sometime back that Steemit was banned in China, not sure about other Steem dapps like busy and Steempeak though.!!

Thanks to this, Steemit is considered to be a unique platform with no equivalent. I hope it will remain so
