Why I Hate Social Media

in #social-media7 years ago (edited)

Firstly, I am under know illusion that the reader really cares what I hate and what I love. I want to present this information here, such that the reader can decide for themselves if it is worth further investigation. I don't like using mainstream media as a source, however my intention is not to provide evidence, rather to raise the question for an individual, "is it worth it?". If it is worth putting in the news then there might be something to it and may require further investigation. Also I am focusing on facebook in this post, I'm not going to entertain the idea of #notallsocialmedia, I am suggesting #allsocialmedia needs to be investigated.

1. Collusion with government departments
"The 2013 mass surveillance disclosures identified Facebook as a participant in the U.S. National Security Administration's PRISM program. Facebook now reports the number of requests it receives for user information from governments around the world." ..wikipedia". You were not meant to find this out, this was going on behind your back.

2. Social engineering project.
If they have done it once they will do it again, just like an abusive partner. By the way you, as the user of face book, are not the narcissist. You are the co-dependant, facebook has NPD, and will use your friends against you to keep you in co-dependancy. Oh yeah and facebook doesn't need you, it has many others from which to draw narcissistic supply from, step out of line and they have a wealth of information to use against you. Sounds like NPD to me!

3. Facebook Stalking
I actually mean facebook stalking you. This was uncovered by data consultant, Nik Cubrilovic, discovered that facebook was collecting data even after the user had logged out. Creepy ass shit, is it necessary, helpful or even moral? Have we come to a point in society where this is acceptable, where the end justifies the means?

4. Manipulating your psychological responses
Facebooks 2016 reactions feature being used to collect psychological data about you, in an effort to bring the right products to you at the optimal time psychologically just for you! Don't you feel special now?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/05/13/dont-use-facebooks-reaction-buttons-if-you-value-privacy-belgian/

5. Mastercard collusion
Facebook and Mastercard entered a deal where facebook would pass user information on to Mastercard, it was a two year deal, so how many more deals have been done? By the way you all agree to this abuse by signing up to the service.

6. Facial Recognition
This is just creepy ass shit!
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-26/is-facebook-s-facial-scanning-technology-invading-your-privacy-rights

7. You don't own your content, sorry guys
Facebook ad campaign. can use any of your content as part their ads, nice. So here's the thing, most on facebook are not content creators they are just people living, so it is not the documentation of something you created, it is the documentation of your life, likes, dislikes and all the rest of it. Sucks to be you.

8. Social media addiction
In 2016, it was reported that facebook ran tests on 20% its users to test how many times people would refresh before giving up on the app in an effort to test the loyalty of its users (disingenuous at best) in response to growing fears of losing users to google+. Hahaha, as if any one would want to do that! The results of the test showed that its use is so ingrained in to people lives, that at no point did people give up on the app (that's co-dependence kickin in folks).

9. Allegations of siding with left politics to effect the outcome of recent USA elections
I am not siting any particular source on this, however this has been covered by many others. But you get the idea right, coercion is being used on people to change and control mainstream thinking and people go along with it because their friends are doing it.

Now, I decided to write this post as I had read a recent post called "Why I Love Social Media" (by @lukestokes who has some good posts). In no way is this an attempt to contradict or undermine the ideas expressed in that post. I myself (although not using social media) see the benefits of a communication tool between friends and communities, However I want to ask the following:
1. is the cost worth it?
2. If we are so dependent on these services that we will use them, regardless if it means gradually letting go of free thought for group thought, is that desirable by the younger generation? I honestly want to know because most people I know don't care.
3. Am I a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy nut". by the way, everyone knows that aluminium foil is way better.

Feel free to let me know below what a paranoid freak I am below.
LB

In addition, check this one out from @lukestokes. If we are going to be skeptical of the banks (and rightly so) we should be skeptical of social media (its our lives after all).

Nice service, I am new and have noticed it is hard to get views, it would be good to crack that old $1 on a post milestone, lol.

Fakebook also has trolls that monitor people with "alternative" ideas- ones that don't fit the FB narrative. I'm being monitored by at least 25...and you can't block them, I tried. Good Post!!!

Thanks mate, social media also promotes this thinking that a subject can be dealt with memes and sound bites. Noting ever gets discussed.

Excellent Thoughts to Consider, and some great reasons too!

Thanks mate, I am trying get my head around the presentation of my posts at the moment and generally get an idea where to head with this blog. I would appreciate any feed back (negative or positive) from more experienced users on posts so, I can improve my content.

I'll follow you to try to keep an eye on you, and check it out from the critique perspective now.

At a glance, your content is solid and you are heading the right direction, you are just newer, so things will take time.

Don't get discouraged, just keep it up, and we will see what happens!

Nice post.
The thing about facebook owning your content is the main reason the pictures I post there are very small and hold a watermark.

Thanks, and good technique, by the way. When I started to compile a list it became clear that I should stay off it. Not that you'd compile a list of pros and cons before you sign up, haha.

Yeah, I joined back when everyone was on it. To connect with friends and such. Now, all I do is scroll through the feed from time to time and even that has diminished greatly, since I started using Steemit.

Right now, the Facebook page for my blog posts more than I do and that's just advertisement.

I agree, if you have any sort of business, you would be crazy not to have one.
