List of Other Blockchain Powered Social Media Services Like Steemit.com

steemit

If you are reading this, then you probably already know and use steemit.com, but you should know that it is not the first blockchain-based social media website out there and will not be the last one for sure. It seems that the concept of crypto currencies and social media if matched well together can really be a winning combination. The huge potential is there and more people want to exploit it, however that does not mean they will manage to do something better as there are other similar projects, but there are also some different concepts as well...

Paymeabit.com is a simple type of social media where users post various types of content and instead of getting Likes from other members like in Facebook they get tips. The tips are in bits or a fraction of Bitcoin, so authors producing good quality content get paid for it in Bitcoin in the end.

Paymeabit is an Italian startup and there are apparently a lot of users from Italy posting in Italian, though English language content is also available as well as probably other languages. The service has been launched recently and is operational already, though it is apparently still in Beta, so you can register and try it out if you are interested.

Reveal.me has a bit different concept from traditional social media, it requires you to use your smartphone to access it and use it (currently only iOS is supported with Android app coming soon). Reveal is being described as the "Ask Me Anything" social network where you can meet new people by asking and answering questions, so it is like Q&A type of platform with a social media element. Since you use a smartphone the service encourages users to use more photo and video content and not to write long text posts.

Reveal has been available for a while already, but the fact that you need to use iOS-based device only to access it (at least for now) with no other options leaves a lot of people out from even being able to try it out and as a result is does not seem that popular or well known yet. The service uses its own Reveal Coin (RVL) crypto currency as a means of rewarding the users for participating in.

Akasha.world is an upcoming social media platform that is going to be powered by Ethereum and interestingly enough Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's creator is an Advisor to the project. Akasha should be a blockchain-based social media platform like many others where good content contributed from users will be rewarded with Ethereum (ETH) encouraging users to be an active part of the project.

The AKASHA social media platform is expected to be available this year. The alpha version is supposed to be gradually released for Linux, MacOS, and Windows on the Ethereum testnet over the course of Q2/Q3 2016. The beta version that will be live on the Ethereum main network is expected to be launched around Q3/Q4 2016. If you are interested you can subscribe on a mail list to be notified when the service is available and get an early access to the Alpha release.

Ethereal.cloud is another Ethereum-based social media network that is supposed to launch in just a matter of hours, however at this point not much is yet know about the project. The countdown on the project's website says less than four hours are left till launch, so we'll have to wait and see what comes out and if it will be direefernt or similar to steemit.com aside from the fact that it will operate on Ethereum (ETH).

There could be other similar blockchain or crypto-powered social media websites, so if something is missing in this list feel free to add it in the comments below...

So much to learn, thanks. Virtual currencies are taking over :-)

Thanks for the write up. What about "Yours" I keep hearing people mention? I also like how the white paper explains tipping will never work as well as what Steemit has with the upvote system.

Yours - https://www.yours.network/
It looks interesting, but not much information about it is available for the moment.

Meanwhile it seems that Ethereum.cloud has failed to launch on time and the countdown is over, but nothing new is on their website.

So the result so far appears to be... Steem On gentlemen, Steem on.

Keep up the great work @cryptos
