World Cup Profile: Brazil

in #soccer7 years ago (edited)

Brazil is undoubtedly the best soccer nation of all time, with a staggering five World Cups. However, in recent years they have been very disappointing in major tournaments. They were embarrassed in their own backyards at the hands of Germany. A 7-1 loss made it the biggest defeat in a World Cup semi-final. In the 2015 Copa America they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Paraguay. Then in the Copa America Centenario they couldn't even advance to the next stage in the tournament. It has been a rough few years for the National team, but things look to be turning around as they are the first team to qualify for the World Cup from South America. The team is starting to gel together though, as they have key players in certain positions.

Brazil's defense is not just a back four. They have depth in their roster so an injury or a suspension wouldn't put a dent in their game. The left full back position is undoubtedly their best position. With the likes of Alex Sandro, Filipe Luis, and Marcelo the only problem they have is picking which one to play. In central defense they have born leaders in David Luiz and Thiago Silva. They both are rocks in the defense for their clubs Chelsea and PSG. One of the most likely reason Germany scored seven goals in the World Cup match is that Thiago Silva did not play due to a suspension and at the time Brazil didn't have they players they have now.

Brazil's midfield has natural play makers in bulk. Players such as Philippe Coutinho help Brazil's passing game flow. He is all over the place supporting his teammates and building up play. The wide midfielders just glide by defenders with speed, agility, and technical ability. They put crosses in to the box for the forwards to get on to. Douglas Costa and Willian are two prime examples of this type of player.

Now we get to Brazil's best position of all time. There has been no lack of world class forwards. Legends of the game such as Pele and Nazario Ronaldo have headlined the national team for years. There is no exception with the players of today's national team. Neymar is one of the best players Brazil has seen, scoring more than forty goals for his country. He is a headline star for both Barcelona and Brazil. Neymar leads the team from the front and is a great example for younger up and coming players. Such as the rising star Gabriel Jesus.

Russia will be the venue of the 2018 edition of the World Cup. That will be the place where Brazil needs to prove that they are still a top nation of the World. We know they have the talent of individuals, but can they put it together on the World's biggest stage?
