This is very apposite and very timely. Exactly the kind of debate that Steemit needs to have and in public. Wanting it to be something is not enough - we have to make it so.
A similar thing happened to content in the video games industry (of which I used to be a part). We used to strive to create and design great single player experiences through things like (what we would loosely call) artificial intelligence.
Then around the era of Quake, we woke up to the fact that we could just design decent multiplayer environments and the human players themselves could fill in for the A.I. and make great player experiences in one big multiplayer game.
What was it that Oscar Wilde once said? Something about great men used to write books, and the public would read them. Now the public write books, and nobody reads them. Or words to that effect. What Steemit desperately needs is more readers and not more wannabe bloggers out to get rich. Oh, wait, that was us, once... :-)
Nicely put - it is also the only platform where you can get rich from posting content that nobody reads.

These debates are ongoing. Incidentally it's also one of the reasons I wont win the competition - I havent engaged with any of.those previous posts! (Its too difficult to find them!)

Although... there is something different about Steemit that makes it (or seems to make it) easier to go out and engage with similarly-minded folk. The engagement level / audience building on here is a lot more rewarding than other platforms I think.
Plus, I was chuffed to bits to find you on here, as I had been reading and using your website for so long :-) I noticed a while ago that @valorforfreedom uses his own external Steem School website to archive and present all of his Steem School lessons, which makes it a lot easier to find and use them. Something like that, combined with the @dbooks.org features are looking like the way forward.

@revisesociology check out what @spiritualmax has to say about it - when I read his article I immediately thought about what you had said before regarding monetising your sociology content on Steemit. This is also a good way to monetise older content that is past its 7-day ageing.
