Happy Labor Day / Education!
Labor Day
As we all know, today is the International Labor Day. This day is really important since we all are parts of working life. Today, I won't talk about the problems that we are facing as educators, but I would like point out another side of this great day. As educators, one of the main duties that we have is to educate our children about human and working rights as they will be the main elements of societies in the future.
There are some nice activities that we can apply in our classes to educate our children about this crucial day. One of the first things that we can do is to ask them their dream jobs. Having a conversation with them about their dream jobs can be a great warm-up activity to get their attention in this topic, we should definitely ask why they are interested in these jobs, so we can lead them to think more about their choices.
Visuals
As all educators know, visuals are really crucial to educate children who are especially under the age of 12. When I do some activities with children, I usually prefer to have some short readings with lots of images on pages. Some story books can be used to educate them about certain jobs and show them what their duties are. They will surely love some short passages along with the pictures on them.
Another great activity is of course drawing. You can ask your students to draw their dream jobs and it is important to ask them to write what those people do in their professions. When we look at the example of doctor, we might ask them doctors' duties, so they can learn something by drawing something while brainstorming some ideas with their friends, it will surely be effective in their learning process.
Brainstorming
If you are an English teacher like me, you can also combine the activity with learning English. You can check their knowledge by asking the meanings of some jobs in English. Children are always proud of what they are doing in the class. It is great motivation for them to show what they have done during the activities, so we should ask them to express their opinion about the profession they choose.
When they are done with their works, we can put their works on the walls in class so that they can be exposed to them more which is really helpful for them to learn more efficiently. If your children don't know anything about jobs and the rights that they have, teachers can give a short speech about them in an interesting way so that children can learn the meaning and importance of this day.
Workers
If it is possible, you can invite some people who are working in different sectors. Having a doctor or fireman in class will surely amaze your students and help them to learn lots of things about their professions. When they see someone new in class who is dressed in a uniform, they will ask them a lot of questions as children are always curious and open to learn about everything.
Some schools make contacts with municipality and have bigger activities in schools bringing all students together in school gardens. I remember we had firemen and police in our primary school telling us their duties and the importance of them in society. In addition to this, if you students are not available to host workers in your class, you can have vice-versa, organizing a trip to a hospital or police station. Make sure that they are interested in your activity!

I liked your publication a lot, some of them I did, and they have been positive, I have also done role-playing activities, the children are disguised as a profession that they would like to practice and they make an exposition of what their work is in society and because they like that race. It is very fun and dynamic. Thanks for your posts I learn a lot from them.
