Coworking
Six months ago, we published an article about opening up a non-profit, Steem-powered co-working office in Valencia. We were came up with this idea just a couple months after signing up for Steemit ourselves.
During our travels, we've worked at many co-working spaces, and have noticed prices going up over the years. People started to realize that a cheap buck could be made off Digital Nomads, so they set up halfhearted office spaces, and overcharged for them. After getting into Steemit, we thought that a Steem-powered co-working might actually work. It'd be a place for Steemians to rent a desk and meet like-minded people, kind of like a Steemit Community Center in real life. After our initial post about this idea we got some feedback and people thought it was great. But for one reason or the other, it never went further than the idea phase.
But thanks to the @sndbox and being part of the Cohort 2 and the Sndbox team asking us to come up with ideas, I've decided to revisit the idea of the Steemit co-working.
To get the ball rolling again these are some of our thoughts.
We'd choose Valencia, Spain, for the first Steemit co-working place. We live here when we're not traveling, and it's also on the radar of Digital Nomads, a wave of whom have moved here or visited for an extended stay. The office wouldn't be exclusive to Steemians, but there were be some basic criteria. It would be a great way to generate interest in Steem, and help new people get started with the platform, if they're interested.
It should be clear that we're not aiming to make a profit with the co-working space, and it will stay like this. The fee for renting a desk will go 100% to operating costs, rent and inventory. Steemians will receive a discount. Since Mike and I are generally on the road for six months of the year, we'd need to find a way to have daily and generals tasks run by members, as well. These are the basics but we would like to know about your ideas and thoughts:
- How can we utilize the Steemit platform to receive rewards to lower expenses of running the space?
- How can we use technology and community to run the place when we're not in town?
- Other thoughts and ideas? Could you see several Steemit Hubs like this pop up around the world?
If some Steemit members are able to make a living of Steemit, why not fund a project connecting the crypto world with the "real" world? We could introduce non-Steemians to a project like the co-working space which is partly funded by Steemit, demonstrating that cryptocurrencies do have an impact outside of computers.
We think it'd be so cool to create a place for people to come together, work, learn, display their art, and even play music. And it's possible, without breaking the bank, if we work on it together, as a community.
It is a very interesting idea, I would open it up to more cryptocurrencies acceptance besides Steemit´s tokens. A co-working space with that feature would attract more users, would increase profits (for rent, operation) and no-steemit users can be lead to Steemit platform with conferences, workshops, meetings in the space. Great idea @for91days..good luck
Thank you for the encouragement - It's really something we would love to set up. Even if it's a place where we can have our offices and sell photography :)
This a really interesting concept @for91days, I've seen some projects like that related to Mechanical Engineering, the so called FabLabs.
I envision your idea and i'd propose to expand, it would not be only a place to rent a desk, but a place for brainstorming in general. There could be free workshops related to content production, photography, travel tips and maybe speeches here and there.
It would be perfect to reunite those willing to learn something new, and if they are non Steemians, even better, because they have a place to learn everything related to Steemid and how the blockchain can help them.
Totally agree, there would be also room for events - teaching people more about the blockchain and such.
I love this concept. I am no longer as nomadic as I once was and totally get the importance of shared space for larger networkings while on the road. I fully support the not for profit aspect to. I think you're really onto something here. Keep up the great work! All the best.
Don't have many insights as to smoother operating, but I'm sure there's some techie who can help.
Great to hear that you're with us with this idea. I really think it's a shame that these for profit places are all over the place, forgetting the communal aspect. If we come together we can create something everyone can benefit from.
