Steemit Smart Media Tokens (SMT's) coming in 2018!

Can someone explain this to me? I'm not sure how the concept of this works.

If I have say my own website not affiliated at all with steemit. For example a forum. This enables me to what? Connect that forum to steemit in a way? Where people on the forum can upvote eachother's comments earning crypto as they do just like here on steemit? And I as the owner of the website can get paid as well?
