The Ultimate Raw Food Smoothie - A One-Two Punch For Health

As I mentioned in my intro post, as I get older it seems that most of my body is beginning to creak and ache. I have spent a lot of time in the past five years researching nutrition and homeopathic ways of staying healthy.

In the process, and after much trial and error, I created a delicious smoothie that contains two extremely potent foods for good health: beets and avocados. Before you click away, I urge you to give it a try. It is tangy and delicious and I know that once you try one you will be hooked. But first, let me tell you about these powerhouse foods.

Why Eat Beets?

First off, beets are a great source of energy. They are low in calories but high in sugar that is slowly released into your body. They contain betaine, which has been used to treat depression and tryptophan, which is known to create a sense a well-being. Beets are also known to lower blood pressure.

Beets are high in magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and iron as well as vitamins A, B and C. They also contain beta-carotene and folic acid. So beets are the one of the One-Two punch in this smoothie. Let’s now look at punch two: avocados.

Why Eat Avocados?

One of the biggest benefits of avocados is that they contain healthy fats. They also contain vitamins A, B2, B5, B6, C, E and K. They also contain Manganese, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Phosphorous, Thiamine and Niacin. What they don’t contain is equally as important: cholesterol or sodium.

One thing about avocados that surprised me is that they contain more potassium than bananas! Since potassium is an important mineral that many people do not get enough of, eating avocados is a great way to add this to your diet.

Both beets and avocados have large amounts of fiber, which is important for weight loss, as well as overall health.

How Beets and Avocados Have Benefitted Me

The biggest benefit I have noticed since eating raw foods is that my constant knee pain has subsided and I have lost 23 pounds.

I have beets and avocados several times a week, but this smoothie is my go-to recipe. It is high in nutrients and delicious.

3 small or 2 medium beets, skinned, seemed and sliced
1 large avocado, cut into cubes
1 to 1 1/2 inches of fresh ginger, grated
5 stalks of kale, de-stemmed
Juice of 2 lemons
3 cups water
2 cup ice
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Makes enough for 2. So share the love and the health.
