Ireland is an island state in Western Europe. The capital and largest city of Ireland is Dublin. It is located in the eastern part of the country. About one third of the 4.8 million inhabitants live there.
The Irish Sea lies in the east, west and south the country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Ireland has been a member of the European Union since 1973. A large part of the population professes the Roman Catholic faith.
