Wild Artichoke of the Bay Area
This is a wild artichoke or feral artichoke since it probably escaped into the wild from domesticated artichokes brought by the Spanish in the late 1890s to early 1900s.
These artichokes, also known as artichoke thistles, are considered an invasive weed. You can eat them, but they are really small compared to globe artichokes. When you are considering what to grow in your homestead you can often look at what is surviving out in the wild.
If a certain type of wild plant can survive without human assistance then a domesticated relative will also do well--especially with your assistance. I plan to grow some globe artichoke of my own.

What you are saying about wild plants makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, I try to grow stuff that will grow with minimal effort. A lot of wild plants out there are edible. Finding plants that are edible and take care of themselves that is a dream come true for me.
