Sunset at Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal

If you're in Nepal, you should should definitely check out Boudhanath Stupa. One of the largest stupas in the world, this UNESCO site was badly damaged after the 2015 earthquakes. It took about a year and a half, but in late 2016 it re-opened to the public.

You'll see lots of monks around Boudhanath as there are many monasteries in the area. If you go early or late, it will be crowded, but not with tourists - the locals come out in mass to circumambulate the stupa (only clockwise please!) but not many tourists are here in the early morning or late evening.

It's a shame, because the stupa is lovely at this time of day. I'd suggest going around sunset, then grabbing a meal at one of the restaurants that overlook the stupa, so you'll get to experience it in the daylight as well as at night. If you're lucky, the moon will be out, and if you're really lucky it will be a full moon, when hundreds of locals celebrate and thousands of candles are lit!
