The global smartphone market has shrunk in the last quarter of last year compared with the same period in the previous year due to the smaller number of users who want to change their phone with a newer model.

Nearly 408 million smartphones were sold in the last three months of last year, a 5.6% drop on an annual basis, according to a report by Gartner.

This is the first drop in smartphone sales, according to Gartner, since the company began tracking the market in 2004, the Financial Times reported.

Against the backdrop of the decline in device sales, demand for 4G connectivity and high-quality cameras remains strong.

The reason for the shrinking global smartphone market is the new device models that do not build up the ancestors with anything that does and can not motivate consumers to buy them, says Anshul Gupta, director at Gartner.

The decade of growth in this market has made it so that most people nowadays have access to a smartphone or tablet, with a reduction in sales rather provoking concerns for the telecoms industry that has experienced a drop in revenue on the Chinese market.

Due to the fact that smartphone sales are shrinking, manufacturers have begun to look for other alternative products to offset discounts as technologies related to the so-called Internet of Things.

According to the report, Samsung remains a market leader, holding an 18.2% share of the global smartphone market.

The Korean company ranks Apple with a market share of 17.9%.

Samsung's profit and revenue could improve this year, as it is expected in 2018 that the company will release the next model from the Galaxy series.

Gartner predicts a good start this year for Apple, predicting strong demand for the new iPhone X.

Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Xiaomi are the only companies that reported sales growth, mainly due to strong demand in Asia.

I wonder why it is. Every blessed day some one is buying a new phone in Nigeria, some even have three to put their different sim cards in.
