Chimpanzees are members of the Hominidae family, along with gorillas, humans, and orangutans. The chimps were separated from humans in family branches about 4-6 million years ago. The above two chimpanzee species are the closest human relatives, all members of the Hominini tribe (following the extinct species of the Hominina sub-tribe). The only known member chimpanzees from the Panina sub-tribe. Both Pan species are separated about 1 million years ago.
