Why I love skateboarding and what it has taught me !

This is some footage I have cobbled together from the last couple sessions us old boy skater have had over the past few weeks. The running order goes like this.

Dude 1 : Beginning of the clip ,first run in the bowl

This dude has been a family friend for years and now cant skate much due to health problems but still comes to hang out and have a run when he can.

My brother: Next two clips on the mini ramp

This dude got me into skating , was the reason I moved to London and we still hang out and skate to this day

Dude 2: Nxt two clips ,bowl run and slow mo laid back grind

This is a friend of ours who we have know for years we have just reconnected and making up for lost skating time.

Me: Slow mo tailslide in the bowl

If you had to go back 30 years ago we would all be doing the same thing but in a different country.

I think this is a good case to start explaining

Why I love skateboarding

General sense of well being and happiness

sinceday1.jpg

This is me at a young age beaming brightly on a skateboard and when I am on a skateboard the feeling is generally the same. There have been times when I got frustrated at learning tricks or frustrated through being injured learning tricks and even times I didn't skate and I was doing the music but I always had this useless wooden toy. In recent times when things have been tough going skating with my mates is only a phone call away and the physical cathartic act always leaves me beaming afterwards. When engaging in a skate trick your mind shuts off and your in some non thinking meditative state. This therfore helps me achive a general sense of well being and happiness.

Health and exercise

What skateboarding does for me know is it provides a vessel for me to try keep in shape. A few years ago a good friend of mine came down to London to skate , I had not been skating much so I was out of shape and only skated for like 30 mins. I remember feeling so bummed that I couldnt skate the whole session and that gave me a good kick up the ass to look into doing more to keep in shape. You tend to foget that its a physical activity and it helps to be in shape. Furthermore you not 18 and can just dive straight back in. In skateboarding in order to do these tricks you need to be confident and in order to be confident you need to have some level of fitness. A lot of times when I have fallen badly is when I am not confident and I have tried to bail midway through the trick and landed awkwardly. I am not saying that everyone has to get a gym membership and work out all I am saying is it has worked for me and I have definatly seen my ability improve and the skate sessions have been more enjoyable than tiring. In addtion to this I also saw how some of the older pro’s like Andrew Reynolds had take to excercise regimes in order to be able to skate alot longer. Again although it is uncool if it works for those dudes than it should be ok for me.

Being an outsider ,taking risks and achieving goals

Growing up in the beach city of Durban in South Africa in the 90’s . Skateboarding was not the most popular choice, in terms of being a teenager and being interested in girls . The adonis surfers that emerged brown and chiseled from the ocean left us stinky dirt bags in their wake. However our little group was tight , fun and full of weirdos . What I learnt being with this group was it was awesome to be an outsider and take risks in this niche activity I participated in.

To drill down further the actual act of skateboarding is about seeing other people doing tricks and learning how to do them. Skateboarding is a cruel mistress in this respect just to get the basics down you have to take a few slams and really push yourself. Personally this set me up for my adult life in doing risky things. I moved to London to play music , I formed a band and we toured the US on our own backs. We didnt make any money but had so much fun.

Now this mindset brought me to cryptocurrency and eventually Steemit and what a cool ride it has been so thank you skateboarding for giving me the ability to take risk and just go for it. Thank you Steemit for letting me put down my skate footage music and write about it.

Music

P.S: I shall remind readers at this juncture that the legend that is @crimsonclad was supposed to be on this song but due to her many commitments was not able to do it , however I will lure her into a collaboration at some point . You have been warned Crim !!!
