Mangrove ecosystem

Mangroves are one of the most important ecosystems in the world. As Sri Lanka is a beautiful island rich in biodiversity, mangroves can also be found along the coastline around Sri Lanka. Mangrove ecosystems are found in lagoons, estuaries and small islands in the lagoon, based on the intertidal zone. These mangroves are found in areas where both marine and freshwater are mixed, and the salinity of the water, loose acid soil, high winds, and high sunlight are essential factors for the growth of these plants. Like all living things, mangroves need oxygen, fresh water, nutrients, and so on. Mangroves have been adapted to make the most of the minimal oxygen, freshwater, and nutrients in the environment.

The main service of these plants is to prevent "seafood". The oak roots of these plants bind well to the soil and cover the soil. This prevents the waves from hitting the ground and protects the beach from "eating the sea". This explains the importance of mangroves. The mangrove environment is the starting point for the number of tourist birds visiting Sri Lanka. Many other animals live in association with these plants. Wild cats, sand leopards, seals, rats, bats, guinea pigs and various reptile species are the main ones. Accordingly, this plant system is intertwined with biodiversity.

It is everyone's duty to protect this beautiful ecosystem. Mangroves can be protected for the future by protecting the remaining mangrove ecosystems, utilizing mangrove plants in an environmentally friendly manner, and replanting mangroves. Also, the value of protecting the mangrove ecosystem through school education should be explained.
