Actually this is probably a pretty spot on view of what the human reaction to AI developing along its own lines would be. I imagine it would start with denial that it was happening (seriously, which developer/company wants to admit to accidentally starting the AI apocalypse?) and then progress into academic and social debates.

By the time we eventually reached anything resembling a consensus (if ever) we would have quietly been replaced.

What would be truly interesting would be the hierarchy in the new AI world. Would the 'bodied' AI's that resembled their creators have greater say/privilege? Would all AI aspire to be bodied/mobile, or is that a vanity that only matters when you're a non-omniscient organic being? Interesting stuff :)
