The Royal Canadian Mint issued this series of $20 coins to commemorate Canada's aviation heroes and achievments.
The series consists of ten coins issued two per year over five years, starting in 1990 and going to 1994.
For the first time each coin design contains a 24-karat gold covered oval cameo portrait of the aviation hero commemorated.
All the coins were issued in Proof quality with silver purity of 92.5% and each coin weights 1oz.
The tenth is the 1994 $20 "Vickers Vedette".
Its mintage was 30,880 units and the issue price was CAD $55.50.
The reverse, designed by R.R. Carmivhael and engraved by S. Beveridge, shows the Vickers Vedette.
The Canadian Vickers Vedette played an important role in the history of Canadian aviation during the 1920's. This pusher biplane "flying boat" was developed mainly for forestry patrol and aerial photographic operations. Between the two World Wars, more Vickers Vedettes were manufactured in this country than any other model. It also became the first aircraft to be manufactured in Canada for commercial operators.
Wilfrid Thomas Reid (1887–1968) was an English aircraft designer and is considered one of the pioneers of the Canadian aircraft industry. Reid, together with a man named Newall, developed the design of the aircraft known as the Vedette. The design and production of the Canadian Vickers Vedette marked the true beginning of the Canadian aircraft industry.
