Apollo 11 - 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar Reveal!

50 years ago, on July 20 1969, 2 men walked on the moon. This was the result of a great tension between the Soviet Union and the United States in the Cold War, where each country essentially had nuclear warhead projectiles pointed at each other nearly 24/7. The space race was a way to show aeronautical and spacial superiority through rocket and other technologies developed for the Apollo mission. The Soviets launched Sputnik, the first satellite in space, which put great pressure on the USA to develop their space program quickly to show that they had the upper hand. Ultimately, the United States would 'win' the cold war when Neil Armstrong stepped out onto the surface of the moon.

I love this coin. It is the first 99.9% pure Silver Dollar from the US Mint, all others were 90%. It, unfortunately, does not weigh 1 Troy ounce as it is only 26.73 grams and not the full 31.15 grams. It is also very expensive. This is the proof version, which means parts of it have a reflective mirror shine to it, and you can get one for $55. Silver spot price is around $16 right now, so you'd be paying over 3.5x the value of the silver content. However, this is a collector's piece as well and it also being curved/domed gives it an extra edginess to it.
