Silence is Golden

A lot has been said about the need to be careful when talking to or about someone. However, there are times when it is best to just keep quiet and say nothing at all. Silence is a great virtue, but sadly it is disregarded by many. It is the ability or rather the grace to be still, calm, quiet or at peace within and without oneself.

This is not a manifestation of weakness as some people think but a rare display of wisdom and maturity. Apostle James said the true measure of someone’s level of maturity and spirituality is not his ability to use his tongue but his ability to withhold it.

Generally, it is advisable to maintain silence when there is nothing positive or constructive to say. This will save you from making vain, suggestive and slanderous remarks as well as their attendant consequences. More importantly, cautious silence is crucial when you are provoked because words uttered in anger can wreck unimaginable and irreversible havoc.

Your displeasure at somebody can make you talk recklessly to him or her. Thus, when under provocation, it is best to keep silent until your nerves are calmed. Also, when you are faced with frustrating situations and during times of adversity; it is better to keep silent. A classic example is when Prophet Elijah was being hunted by Jezebel.

Out of frustration, the prophet of fire wished to rather die as he thought he was only standing for God. You will, therefore, do yourself a whole lot of good by choosing to be silent when overwhelmed by life’s challenges.
Finally, when you are confused or going through trial of faith, it is best to keep silent and spend quality time in reflection before expressing an opinion.

However, you must ensure that your silence is only aimed at promoting peace and preserving Godliness. It should never be used as a tyrannical weapon to get back at others.

Always remember that silence is golden! May God give you the grace to keep silent during provocations, challenges and confusion in Jesus name?
