What is a Shreds Video?

When someone remixes video from a musician's performance with their own (usually bad) audio in sync with the instruments and lip movements of the original artist, it's called an "X Shreds", "Shreds" or simply "Shred" video.

The genre reportedly surfaced in 2007 when a user calling themselves StSanders on YouTube posted video's of other musicians where he had re-dubbed the audio with his own, even using different instruments at times.

Shreds video's also have a formula to maximize the lulz potential.

  • Most use rock or metal bands, but not always.
  • The guitarist in the original video was really "shredding" it.
  • And the vocalist performance is incoherent and/or unique.
  • Random drum solo's may appear.
  • Something called the "frame visual element". It is when an instrument that is not in frame is not heard by the listener. In other words, that instrument does not exist in the audio unless it is shown in the video frame. The intention being to create maximum awkwardness and a video that appears to seem empty and/or lacking substance. Which is the entire goal of a Shreds video!
  • It must be so entertaining that even musicians find it funny.

So now you know what you're in for.

Liked the post and vids!

These are hilarious as hell!!!

There was a CREED OW WEEEE OH one that I saw about 6 years ago. I used to watch these quite a bit. As a guitar player/musician these made me laugh and cry pretty hard frequently. There was also some SHOW one night like a letterman/leno type thing where the guy that first did SHREDS videos made one live on the show.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I sound like singing Creed songs.

That's the one. :) I've laughed at many shreds, but that one has made me laugh quite often.
