THE SICK LEAVE

‘’Where are you going to?’’, The cab man asked Jessica.

‘’I am going to St. Louis general Hospital’’, she replied.

‘’Ok hop in’’; The cab man said.

Jessica had woken up that morning feeling really lazy and exhausted and didn’t just feel like going to work that day. She had gone clubbing with her friends the previous night being Sunday and had a little bit of a hangover. She thought of what to do to avoid going to work that day and different thoughts ran through her mind. ‘’Should I tell them I am pregnant?’’, She thought to herself.

She laughed at how stupid the idea was and decided to come up with a better plan.

When she got to the hospital, she alighted from the cab, paid the cab man and headed towards the hospital entrance. On getting into the hospital, she met with the receptionist and booked an appointment with the doctor.

‘’Please do have your seat ma’am. What can I do for you?’’, The doctor asked.

‘’Sir, I am not really sick but I have come to get a sick leave from you’’, said Jessica.

The doctor smiled, opened his drawer and took out a file. He brought out a piece of paper from it, got a pen lying freely beside him, wrote a few things really fast on the piece of paper and handed the paper over to Jessica.

With shock on her face, she looked at the doctor and said,

‘’Am I the one suffering from all these? ‘’

‘’Of course’’, the doctor replied.

‘’But I didn’t come for you to declare me dead, I only came for a sick leave sir’’, Jessica screamed.

The sick leave had a portion for diagnosis and the following were the illnesses listed that were found In Jessica’s body after a test;

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Acinetobacter infection, Blastocystis hominis infection, Dientamoeba fragilis infection, Japanese Encephalitis, Genetic and Colorectal cancer, Neurocysticercosis, Ulcerative Colitis, Pediculus humanus corporis, phthiriasis, to mention but a few…

The doctor had done this on purpose because he was tired of healthy people coming into his office on a daily basis asking for a sick leave. He felt it tells on his integrity and reputation as a professional doctor.

Jessica threw the paper at the doctor and went home sad and upset, prepared for the query letter she was going to receive the next day for skipping work without a reason.
