For customers, eCommerce sites offer means of shopping from the comfort of their homes and access to anything and everything at their fingertips. For sellers, selling online leads to elimination in the cost of running a physical store and opens the doors of their business to a worldwide customer base. Setting up an eCommerce site is not just about buying a domain and uploading photos of the products. Here are 5 tips to ensure your eCommerce site becomes a success:

Attractive Graphics: Would you visit a store that is filled with products in a haphazard way and where it takes a long time to find what you are looking for? Or one that doesn't look appealing? The same concept applies to eCommerce sites as well. Customers tend to visit sites that have attractive graphics. The landing page is the first thing visitors see on the site and that should make them want to explore further which can lead to a purchase. Listing popular products on the landing page is also helpful as it makes it easier for customers to find what they are looking for.

Secure Payments: With online thefts of user data on the rise, customers have become more discerning about the security of the sites. As most returning customers store their addresses and credit card details on the site, it is pertinent that you have a good security on the site. An online third party payment service like PayPal or a merchant account with the bank will ensure that the payment details are secure.

Shopping Cart: Just as in physical stores, customers like to browse around in a site also. The easier that is to do, the more the chances of them returning and making a purchase. Adding and removing products from the cart and modifying the quantities of the items in the cart should be made as simple as possible. Customers are more likely to make a purchase from a store that has a simple but efficient shopping cart and that makes it easier to add multiple items and continue shopping after adding an item.

Up-to-Date Inventory: When a customer visits a site to purchase a specific product and it is out of stock, they tend to go to other sites that may have it in stock. The next time they need the same product, they will visit the site that had it in stock. Therefore, always try to keep all products in stock as far as possible. It is even more important to keep track of your inventory and update the site accordingly. It is always better for a customer to know the product is out of stock before making the payment. Getting a message saying the product they paid for is out of stock leaves a bad impression in the mind of the customer.

Sales, Promotions and Offers: One of the main reasons online shopping has become popular is the offers and discounts eCommerce sites provide. Due to reduced overhead costs incurred by the seller, eCommerce sites can pass on the benefits to the customers. Make sure the sales and offers are displayed on the top one-third of the landing page. It should be the first thing visitors see when they enter the site. This increases the chances of the customer making an actual purchase. It is not just enough to offer discounts on the sites, publicising it through social media or emails ensure that the customers know about the offers and can utilise it fully.
