A Thanksgiving For Breaking Records

in #shopping8 years ago

This Thanksgiving is set to be much busier than years past. It is estimated that at least 43.5 million Americans are going to travel this holiday, roughly 50 miles or more away from home to see their loved ones this holiday. This makes it a busier travel year than the nine past thanksgiving holidays, the busiest since 2007. And it's estimated that at least 3.7 million of those traveling will be doing so by air which is a slight increase from last year.

More retailers are also going to be closing their doors this Thanksgiving Day. Stores like Office Depot and HHGregg will be closed, along with the Mall of America, and several Sears locations. Some have said that they want their employees to be able to spend the time at home with their families instead, but various reasons have been given. For many, simply opening their doors on this holiday has proven to be too much of a headache for them. As well, the amount of Thanksgiving Day shoppers has been on the decline for several years. And for those who do want to do some shopping, they increasingly want to be able to find the same kinds of sales online from the comfort of wherever they are.

The day after Thanksgiving Day is Black Friday, which is one of the biggest shopping days of all, and some businesses will be changing their approach this year. Like Amazon, which has decided to extend its Black Friday sales for two whole weeks this year. A number of other retailers, like Home Depot, Target, and Sears, are also looking to start rolling-out pre-sales prior to the start of Black Friday.

Last year, shoppers spent a whopping $4.45 billion just on online sales alone for Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day. And at least one third of the shoppers decided to use their mobile phone in order to make the purchase. On Black Friday alone, e-commerce sales brought in roughly $2.72 billion and that was an increase of about 14 percent from the year before. The Thanksgiving Day sales also showed an increase from 2014, with about $1.73 billion in sales. The most popular items that people purchase on those shopping days have been 4K televisions, iPads, and other electronic devices.
