How agricultural subsidies kills the developing world.

in #shame7 years ago

Much of the developing world has vast agricultural and human resources.

Tapping into these resources would help grow these developing economies but something devastating is standing in the way, making the land unprofitable to farm and driving much of the rural poor to the cities in search of a better life.

Developed countries negotiate trade agreements that are most favorable to themselves. They too want to keep their farmers on the land and so subsidies their farming activities.

The surplus produce is then dumped on emerging markets at prices well below the local production costs.

The developed world effectively passes on their problem of keep the agricultural sector alive and thereby obliterate competing emerging market agricultural sectors.

After the fact they promise aid and in-debt the developing world further and make them more reliant on handouts.

Solving their own problems at home instead of forcing their problems onto the very nations they are supposedly committed to giving a hand up would be a better solution than biased trade agreements struck with corrupt officials in emerging markets.

Hate to say it, the meat industry/agriculture is mostly not sustainable. I still eat meat but if we all became vegan, the world would be a better place with such vast population. The food tastes just as good if not better because my girl friend is vegan. I Just choose to eat meat because its how I was brought up. Hopefully I can change my attitude. Its hard to change when there is a lot of money to be made and high demand for unsustainable products. The waist produced, amount of grain consumed to feed animals, pesticides and vast deforestation; Its crazy. We need to have better answers for local farmers and humanity as a whole. Local production would change for the better if we all consumed and marketed truly sustainable produce. Instead companies just try to make a quick dollar. I guess these problems are throughout everything that is mass produced and transported. There are so many cover ups about what is truly sustainable and most just don't want to believe it or choose to ignore the problems.

Thank you for opening the eyes of the world about the dilemmas of farmers in developing like ours countries (Indonesia) through STEEMIT window.
It is very unfortunate indeed, amid so vast natural potentials with adequate power of farmers, but the income of farmers in developing countries is always below standard income, thus making them still have to survive under the poverty line, the main cause as you said before, corrupt officials, system distribution and subsidies controlled by investors and middleman are rampant by buying agricultural products at very cheap prices during the harvest.
And......... It's so sad.

Most farmers in Africa produce in very small scale, just enough to feed the their families. Large scale is done by large corporations and the produce is mainly for export!
Land is also a issue, in Kenya for example - almost half of the country's fertile land is owned by 1-3 families. Here people live as squalors in their own country!

Yes, its a complex issue.

Resteemed bc this is sooooo important! Thanks for taking the time to write this great post! I write about Monsanto on my post @dakini5d and if we all keep raising awareness, these earth-stealers will be stopped! upvoted, following and suggested for @originalworks
