White Diamond is here!
After a very long wait, the fans of Steven Universe finally met the last of the diamonds in the episode "Legs from Here to Homeworld," who was always a mystery, as she was never mentioned even though the figure of the white diamond appeared in the visual representations of the diamonds. She was an omnipresent being even though we knew nothing about her.
Since we know about them, we know that diamonds are the most powerful beings in Homeworld. They are the apex of the hierarchy on this planet, and all gems are meant to serve them. As they have appeared in the series, we have learned that each diamond has her own characteristics and personality.
Blue Diamond is melancholic, sensitive and calm. She is able to transfer her feelings to the other gems, and make them feel those feelings like their own, without them being able to do anything about it. She has mourned the death of Pink Diamond for thousands of years, until Steven revealed to her that Pink Diamond's gem continues to exist through him.
Besides, we know that every diamond ship is shaped like a body part. Blue Diamond's ship is a left arm.
Unlike Blue, Yellow Diamond is fearless, hides her feelings and is aggressive. She always seems to be in complete control of herself and those around her, so she is disturbed by Blue's behavior and has always treated Pink Diamond with firmness. She also suffered the loss of Pink for thousands of years, but she hid her grief. She is capable of altering the physical form of the gems with her rays.
Yellow's ship is a right arm.
Pink Diamond is depicted as a whimsical child. She wants to colonize a planet just like Blue and Yellow, and they offer her the Earth. However, Pink realizes the value of life on this planet and decides to protect it.
In trying to convince the other diamonds to stop the colonization of the Earth and fail in the process, Pink took the form of Rose Quartz, leader of the Crystal Gems, and progressively faked her own shattering (she had Pearl take the form of Rose Quartz and "shatter" Pink Diamond in her palanquin) to disappear.
Then Rose made the decision to become a new life. She fell in love with a human named Greg, became "pregnant" and gave life to a human with the gem of Pink Diamond. This human is Steven, the protagonist of our series. He is a different existence from Pink and Rose, even though he has the same gem. They are able to heal gems (even revive beings as in Lars' and Lion's case, for example) with their tears/saliva.
Pink's ship is a pair of legs.
Lastly, about White Diamond we can't say much because, as we mentioned before, she is a mysterious character and her first appearance occurred in the last seconds of the episode "Legs from Here to Homeworld." What we can deduce from Blue, Yellow and Pearl's description is that White is "different" from any other gem, even the other diamonds. They describe her as "difficult." Her ability has not been confirmed, but from what we see in this episode, she is probably able to alter the mental state of the gems.
At Homeworld, we met White's pearl (since each diamond has her own pearl), and she has physical deformations. This is disturbing to the viewer, as it makes us wonder... Are these deformations due to White's mistreatment? Is she an evil being?
What we do not question is that the atmosphere around White is overwhelming. Her chambers, of a scale of whites, blacks and greys, seem to absorb everything, and we cannot help but think that the "joy" she shows for Pink's return actually conceals a great anger. Or, on the contrary, it can be interpreted as a detachment from emotions: White patronizes Steven and doesn't listen to what he has to say, without showing a hint of emotion. It's frightening and intriguing.
White's ship is a head with a torso.
What does White plan to do with Steven/Pink Diamond? We'll only know that in the next episode...
It's interesting that Pink is the one depicted with two legs in the iconography. Also White's gem is depicted as being in her head but she doesn't have a visible gem in her somewhat-undefined head.
I was kind of hoping we would get more time without a defined villain, but it seems like that's at least sort of where they're going with White.
I think White could be a great antagonist because she doesn't show any emotion and feels very distant! And Steven always uses empathy to approach his "enemies" and make them his friends. I don't know if he can do that with White!
