Chernobyl is overrated!

Okay— this is my unpopular opinion — so hear me out on this one.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Chernobyl —I have to say that this isn’t the greatest thing that ever happened to television.Chernobyl is a historical drama television miniseries created and written by Craig Mazin, and directed by Johan Renck. The series was produced by HBO in association with Sky UK, it depicts the Chernobyl, the name of a city situated in northern Ukraine near the border with Belarus.

Chernobyl was largely abandoned following the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear PowerPlant located 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) away. The City is now within the 30Km Exclusion Zone that surrounds the Nuclear Power Plant. Prior to its evacuation Chernobyl was inhabited by 16,000 people but is now populated only by Zone administrative personnel, some of those involved in decommissioning the power plants and a number of residents who refused to leave their homes or subsequently returned. The thing about the miniseries is that — yes — there were plenty of awesome moments, and some good character arcs/writing, etc — but also numerous cliches and some painfully oversimplified ‘historical’ scenes to suit the miniseries narrative.

I would give this a solid 7 — okay — maybe 8/10 territory. But to place it in the 9+ category along with previous HBO shows like The Wire, The Sopranos, Band Of Brothers — is reactionary “in your face D&D” hype IMUO. But it is still a miniseries worth watching. — so what do you think about this? Did you enjoy watching the Chernobyl or did you think it was overrated?
