I think that's why it's still being a big deal. The same method that worked amazingly a few months ago might do nothing good than a harm now. People who can upgrade their skills/techniques along with the Search Algorithms are winning the game :).
But you are absolutely right at this point

think about the good of your customers and their needs and make sure your site provides them with real value.
