Ukraine aid bill.

So we are into arcane weeds with the Senate which is unfortunate for Ukrainians watching from afar. I'll try to explain what happens next.

The Senate will be meeting at noon today. The vote to proceed with debate of the Ukraine aid bill will occur at 7 pm. That requires just a simple majority.

Then Schumer will file for cloture to get to the actual vote. That will set up a potential cloture vote on Superbowl Sunday. That would require 60 votes.

Then depending on how much Rand Paul wants to mess with things, we'll get the actual vote on the bill sometime between probably Monday-Wednesday. That again would require 60 votes.

In between all of this amendments might be considered.

As it stands now there are no immigration/border elements to the bill. It is for Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel aid.

Rand Paul of course, being the Russian asset he is, says he will try to delay the bill as long as possible.

Right now there have been 67 votes for cloture. That doesn't mean we have 67 votes for the eventual bill, but it is promising in that regard.

Assuming this eventually gets passed in the Senate. It would go to the House. Speaker Mike Johnson hasn't made clear if he'll allow a vote on it. But there are mechanisms to override the Speaker. Minority leader Jeffries has signalled he'll use a discharge petition to bypass the Speaker. This would require some Republicans to sign onto the petition.
