Eating frozen berries on a hot day : A peek at what berries I will be targeting this coming fall

Yesterday was just 60° but considering this past winter got down to -30° it was hot!
We had no more ice pops but I had frozen berries!

Very messy and stained hands

I pulled out my blue berries. I didn’t realize that putting them in the same freezer as the salmon would matter so much 🤢
Salmon/fish flavored blue berries are not yummy. I even tried to add sugar, yuck! Still nasty!

So I went back to my freezer, I found watermelon berries, raspberries and cranberries.

⬆️These are watermelon berries. I bet you are wondering why they are called watermelon berries. It’s not because of their flavor, but for their seed content.
They have TON of little seeds, but are so worth eating!
We strain the seeds out and make jelly/jam/preserves with them. These are hard to gather, they are a rainforest type plant. They require a lot of water to produce. These are one of our favorites. While on a walk-about in the woods we eat them.

⬆️These are raspberries. We went to a “you pick” farm last year and got them. They had four rows that where at least 100 foot long, packed full of bushes. It was our first trip there and it was 6 or 10 mile down a long and twisting back road that seemed to never end.

⬆️These are high bush cranberries. They have a lot of juice, thin skin and a large seed. These are bitter and one of my kids favorite berries. It’s hard to harvest them because they will eat all they can find! They grow on our property.

⬆️These are blueberries/bog berries we picked. We have a few favorite places to pick. One in Willow, one in Talkeetna, and one in Wasilla.

We make jams, jellies and preserves with our berries.
Yes we picked all the berries pictured, we have more in our freezer.

So on a hot day and you have no ice pops, frozen berries make a great substitute.
Just make sure your berries are not stored in the same freezer as your fish. LOL
