Women look more attractive to men when their photo is taken from above, a new study found. The high angle of the camera makes women look weaker and younger, psychologists have discovered.

Men in turn look more dominant if their photo is made from below. The angle from which the picture is made changes the viewer's perceptions, the scientists say.

Here's what the study's authors explain:

"... the view from above (high camera angle) increases the signs of youthfulness and attractiveness, such as big eyes and forehead, and this seems to be compatible with women's motives [in dating profiles]. In fact, women look more attractive when their head is slightly sloping downwards and seen from a higher angle. "

For men:

"Bottom view (low camera angle) strengthens the signs of dominance such as high stature and wide jaw, which seems to be compatible with men's motives. In fact, the subjects look more dominant when their head is slightly tilted back are viewed from a lower angle. "

What scientists have discovered is that men and women are shooting at different angles, depending on the motives they have. While [heterosexual] women are making peasants on top, when they want to look more appealing when the picture is aimed at other women, they are shot figuratively.

In heterosexual men, the same tendency is observed: they make low-angle peoples to look attractive to women and switch to frontal peasants when the audience is mostly other men.

The authors of the study were inspired by the profiles posted on dating sites. They show that women are willing to publish high-angle pictures while men do not show clear preferences for their profile pictures.

However, for professional photos on LinkedIn, men tended to lower the camera's angle, making them appear more dominant.
