I always participate in photography contests, which is what I most like to share, but I am also a nature lover, so I want to take advantage of this contest to give my humble opinion on this very controversial topic and in which we should all get involved without exception. Thanks to @Upmewhale for choosing this interesting topic and giving us the opportunity to express it from our own experience.

I don't have any scientific studies on the subject so I'm not an expert on it, I've just read a lot about it and I can say that many articles have made my skin crawl because of the catastrophic predictions for the next 30 or 50 years! When you see the climate changes in your environment and that affect you directly is when you start to become aware and try to make the relevant changes in your lifestyle.

I think if we all made an effort and changed our lifestyles we would contribute to the reduction of climate change. I know we have always blamed capitalism, but what would capitalism be if we were not so consumerist?

But what is climate change?

According to what I have read climate change is an effect of global warming produced by several gases, among them the most responsible is Carbon Dioxide or CO2. These gases accumulate on the surface of the earth preventing the sun's rays that penetrate our atmosphere from coming back out, thus increasing the temperature on the planet. This phenomenon is also known as the Greenhouse Effect. Some scientists claim that global warming is something that has always existed on the planet and is due to volcanic eruptions and ocean gases, and that these are cycles the planet goes through that have nothing to do with human activity, while others claim that the main cause is the daily activity of man on earth.

To understand more about Climate Change I invite you to watch this short video from Nathional Geographic.

I am nobody to assure which of the two versions is the true one, because in many cases all these movements always hide political and capitalist plans, I think that there is always something to sell behind any movement of changes, but that is only my opinion.

Regardless of whether the first version is true or not, what it is true, is that we are causing damage to our planet. It is enough to see the surroundings of the city where we live to realize the negative impact we cause. Mass transportation, industry, the burning of fossil fuels and even the deforestation of our forests are the main emitters of gases. This is the first thing we perceive when we live in such a polluted city, in my case I have been in Mexico City and the pollution is noticed when you look up and if you go in a plane you can see that it is worse than what you see from below, and just like this great metropolis there are many all over the planet.

How does it impact me and my community?

The first thing we can notice about global warming is the increase of heat in areas where the climate was cooler, for example in the city where I live, (Villahermosa. Tab. Mex.) according to people who have lived all their lifetime in these lands say that 40 years ago they could sleep without a fan all night, just leaving the windows open was enough to keep the rooms cool all night. Now it is impossible to sleep without air conditioning. Temperatures between March and June range between 36 and 38 ºC, and the hottest days reach 43 with thermal sensations of 50, it is something very difficult to bear outside! Every day I check the temperature, it is a habit of those of us who live here and on the radio they are always announcing how the weather is going to be.

One of the most catastrophic events in Villahermosa due to climate change was the flooding in 2007!

It started raining on Saturday, October 27, 2007 and continued on Sunday and Monday, the rain intensified so much that the main rivers like the Grijalva and the Carrizal surpassed their normal levels and overflowed, everything was covered by more than a meter of water and in the lower parts of the city the water level exceeded two meters. Crops, livestock, houses, roads, parks, industries, and several human lives were lost.

But these things don't just happen in Villahermosa, disasters of this kind happen all over the world, climate changes cause floods, prolonged droughts, hurricanes, forest fires, melting ice and rising sea levels, disappearance of animal species, shortages of food and drinking water and serious health problems worldwide.

But what can we do?

Although the governments of each country are most responsible for doing something to mitigate the emissions that cause climate change since their actions are on a large scale and affect both their own and other countries' populations, we as individuals can also make significant changes to reduce the emission of gases that cause climate change.

Simple actions can make a big impact if we all use them:

  • Walking more, using bicycles or public transport to go to work or study.
  • Avoiding air transport.
  • Eating less meat and more green food.
  • Growing our vegetables.
  • Avoiding wasting water in showers and toilets.
  • Choosing renewable energy for your home or office.
  • Using energy efficient appliances.
  • Unplugging computers, televisions and other electronic devices when not in use.
  • Avoiding the use of plastic bags.
  • Using less hot water for washing clothes and dishes.
  • To extend the life of the devices by fixing them.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • Getting involved in environmental protection activities.
  • Participating in reforestation campaigns.

In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket.

In short..

I believe that even though the news and statistics are alarming we can still do something to heal our planet, and the key is to unite as citizens to support all the organizations that strive to make this world a better place for our children, grandchildren, fauna but above all for this land that has given us everything and that we have hurt so much. Let's not lose faith and continue the fight, do your bit._

While "Climate Change" itself is very real, it is nothing more than a hoax to suggest that the changes we are going through are made made, or that man has any ability to stop the changes which are taking place.

The climate changes that the earth is now going through are simple the effects of the natural evolution of the planet, as it has happened so many times throughout its history. Any scientist that does not have some personal agenda, be it political or monetary, will confirm that fact.

Having said that however, there are indeed some suggestions put forward by those who believe that climate change is man made, that in fact are quite reasonable to put into action. One such suggestion is to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and find cleaner safer more-sustainable sources of energy. I would agree with that completely, not that it will have any significant effect on the inevitable changes which are taking place, but rather that it will produce a much cleaner environment for us all.
