Why Self-Development Matters More Than You Think

Most of the people you know stopped learning a great deal when they left school. Maybe they learned to drive and had to be shown the ropes when starting a new job, but they didn't expand their basic education. What's more, they didn't consider spiritual growth in the slightest.

Does this matter? Unfortunately, yes. Self-development increases well-being on all levels, and without steady progress toward self-betterment, you will never get to realize your potential. Take a look at the benefits of personal growth, and you may be tempted to indulge.

Strengthen your brain

Fresh neural connections are created in your brain every time you learn something. Years ago, people thought the human brain could only develop so far and then stopped. Now we know the brain is malleable, which means it can be enhanced no matter your age or (nervous gulp) shrink.

If you want to remain alert and intelligent into old age, self-development is crucial. Additionally, why settle for a small knowledge-bank when yours could be substantial? Knowing more can help you get a better job, communicate well, and improve relationships, and comes with a variety of other advantages too long to list.

Gain self-awareness

Have you noticed that some people have low self-awareness and the trouble this causes them? When you don't understand your mind, you're liable to blame others for your moods instead of taking charge of your emotions.

Recognizing how you react to situations can alert you to areas of your behavior you can change and reap the rewards of doing so. Self-aware people don't get road rage or throw tantrums. Nor do they imagine their happiness depends on circumstances outside of themselves. As such, they have personal power.

Be happier

Self-development not only keeps your brain young and puts you in charge of your emotions, but it also makes you happy. Humans are designed to continue learning. When they stop they no longer thrive, and lack of enthusiasm for life makes them sad and tired. A lively mind that regularly upgrades is motivated and upbeat. As a result of continuing to improve, you'll be content.

You don't have to cultivate your psyche any more than you need to develop your muscles. However, do so, and you'll be more resilient due to greater self-awareness and have greater control over your well-being too. Aim to expand your knowledge in all areas of your life, from your career to how your mind works, and you will continually improve.

Greetings @zeartul! Do you think Steemit has what it takes to be one of the top 10 global social media platforms?

We do! Are you willing to help us do what it takes to fix steemits vulernabilities so we can bring this platform to the mainstream?

I represent an media alliance with over 10 million followers. We see that steemit needs a few small, but very important changes to make it to the next level.

Please share your solutions with us! And help us attract the attention of steem developers. Share your wisdom and thoughts with us at
https://steemit.com/steem/@earthnation/solutions-to-bring-steemit-to-the-mainstream-discussion-thread-share-your-solutions-help-us-attract-steem-developers-attention

Together, we will bring steem to the Mainstream!

If you aren't growing, you're dying.

I can attest to this. Stagnation is a silent, slow killer, perhaps more fatal than people realize.

Hitting a wall is inevitable in life. Having the motivation to move past it makes the difference between complacency and true fulfillment.

Everything is a learning opportunity.

Some people are just more 'awake' than others.

And so tend to be more proactive than the cartoon figure above!

Self development can be an approach to life that needs care in the way it is picked up.

We can absolutely benefit and make our lives more interesting and beneficial, yet the idea of making 'more' of ourselves can become a way of beating ourselves up.

At another level we may begin to question, just what is the self we are trying to develop? Some wisdom traditions would tell us that there is not one other than as a (useful) construct.

That understanding can be liberating or terrifying depending on what insight a person has into their own thoughts and feelings.

Of course not everyone wants to begin what can be a difficult journey

  • and really there is no obligation to wake up!

@zeartul - Self development is definitely a must. Life should be a continuous journey of learning. I have experienced the strengthening of my brain capacity when I learn new things. Just take the example of Steemit. I knew using computers in my work life but I had never ever blogged. Due to steemit, in 3 months, I taught myself markdown, artwork and even SteemSQL.
Now I know the source of your innovative approach and limitless energy!!
Thanks for sharing this. Upvoted full.

Regards,

@vm2904

This is especially true if you want to keep being promoted in your job or in life for that matter. You should never stop finding ways to better yourself. This is one of the reasons I love Steemit so much. I feel every day on here I learn something new and am better for it.

I agree with you on self development, but it hasn't really helped me much.

I tried CSS and Html tutoring myself and got stuck at some point and i abandon it

I think people would invest more time in self-development if they didn't spend so much time on their "image" on Facebook etc.
We live in a time now where the outside is so much more valued than the inside, which is one of the reasons why people don't learn after they leave school. They are simply not motivated enough.

Another main issue is that the mainstream music is easily consumed, which therefore also make people used to easy things.

Self-development takes time and many hours of thinking, in some way it is the difficult path, while listening to Rihanna and repeating yourself over and over again is easier.

Once learning was a privelege now it is a duty that people look forward to leave behind them at some point in the life.
